Free Samples?

We gladly offer free fabric samples so you can appreciate the beauty of our colors as well as the weight of our fabrics. Our fabric is the highest available quality, which means your shades will look better, last longer and provide greater energy efficiency. Just fill out the samples form and we will ship them to you no charge.

Color Accuracy

Although we do our best to portray colors accurately, actual colors will vary. Many colors and subtle textures cannot always be shown on computer monitors, and monitor calibration varies.

Since all products are custom-made for you, and cannot be returned, if an exact color match is required, then please contact us before placing your order. Keep in mind dye lots may vary slightly between the sample swatch and the product you receive. Therefore we can’t guarantee the color of your order will exactly match any sample you receive or match shades previously ordered. We will use your room designations to ensure that one dye lot is used on shades that are installed near each other.

How do I know whether I need an inside mount or an outside mount?

An inside mount shade sits within the window frame. You can purchase an inside mount if you have flat space above the shade. Learn More...

The outside mount is for window openings that are too shallow for an inside mount. The outside mount would be screwed into the face of the window frame or on the wall above the window frame. For outside mount measurements we suggest an overlap of at least 1” on either side of the window.
The universal brackets are designed for both mounting applications. Learn More...

Production Time

We like to fill orders as soon as possible. Generally, estimated production time on a shade is 7-10 business days (Monday - Friday) for a light filtering window shade order.

All other shades can take up to 20 business days for production. Since each shade is hand crafted, production time may vary. Our facility is closed for all traditional holidays including U.S. Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you have a particular deadline give us a call and we will see what we can do! (877) 887-4239.

Measuring Insurance

We encourage you to purchase measuring insurance aka measuring safeguard which is regularly an additional 10% of the cost of each shade, but is now Free through May 1, 2014. If the size is incorrect, we will make you a replacement shade at no additional charge. You can add the option when you customize your cellular shade. This insurance only applies to the size of the shade. Learn More...

Product Options

Options for cellular shades:

  • Standard – The shade is operated with a string that gets longer and shorter when raised and lowered.

  • Smoothy, Continuous Cord Loop aka OmniRise or Window Valet – A continuous cord that raises and lowers the shade while the cord stays the same length. This option is great for larger shades.

  • Cordless – The cellular shade is operated by lifting the bottom bar. A plastic handle is included with all cordless shades. Cordless shades are a great option for child safety
    .
  • Cordless Top Down/Bottom Up – A Cordless cellular shade is operated by lifting the bottom bar or the middle bar to get a top down view. A plastic handle is included for each rail with all cordless shades. Cordless shades are a great option for child safety.

  • Top Down Bottom Up aka Duo fold – Shade can be opened from the top and bottom. This allows you to enjoy the light from your window while maintaining privacy.

  • Energy Saving sidetracks – Sidetracks bridge the gap between your window frame and the cellular shade. Not only do they provide increased insulation, they help black out the light. Tracks require a 1.5” flat surface depth on the side of your window frame for mounting.

  • Motorized window shades – Our motorized window shades can be battery operated or powered by a transformer. Buy a single channel remote to operate all of your shades at once. The 5-channel remote allows you to operate your shades individually or in groups.

Can I use sidetracks with a motorized shade?
We do not recommend using the ComforTrack Plus system in combination with a motorized shade. There is a chance of the shade hanging up on the tracks and burning out the motor. We want to provide only the most reliable product, so we do not offer the option.

Skylight Applications

  • Balcony Skylight shade – The balcony skylight shade designed for smaller applications. The shade attaches to your skylight opening at the top and bottom rails and includes retainer tracks on either side for additional support. The balcony shade operates with extending pole, which is sold separately.

Installation & Mounting

Is all the necessary hardware included?

Yes, we supply the correct number of brackets and any other components necessary to enjoy your shade. Items such as hold downs and extension brackets must be specified when ordering.

What do the mounting brackets look like?

There are 2 different mounting brackets for Symphony Shades. One fits the Standard and Top down Bottom up Shades. The other fits the Continuous Cord, Cordless and motorized shades. These brackets are designed to work for both inside and outside mount shades. Products such as skylight shades have a different mounting system. See the specific product’s installation instructions or contact us for details.

What if I want to mount the shade on a door?
You can easily mount our shades on a door. That would be an outside mount. You just want to make sure you measure and install the shade at least two inches above the glass to avoid and breakage. . Pay close attention to door handles to make sure the shade is clearing any potential obstacles.

For a sliding glass door, you can mount the shade either on the wall above the door, or within the frame if you have 1.5 inches of flat surface depth to mount the top rail.

Insulation & R-value

What is R-value?

R-Value is primarily used as a measure of comfort in winter and indicates a fabric's ability to reduce the flow of heat through it. The higher the R-value, the better its resistance to heat loss or gain. A double honeycomb cellular shade (like our Symphony line) with its high R-value has superb insulating values which can result in substantial energy savings, year after year. Make sure you are making an “apples to apples” comparison! Because there is not standardized testing it is important to know what kind of window the company has used to test their fabric. . We list our R-Value with a variety of windows. More info on R-Value.

What is Shading Coefficient?

Shading Coefficient is important in hot weather and indicates a fabric's ability to reduce heat flow from the outside into your home through the window shade. A shading coefficient of 0.35 means 65% of the heat stays outside. On a hot day, heat coming in through your windows can raise room temperature by 15-20 degrees and make your air conditioning work two to three times harder. A lower shading coefficient translates into less heat gain, more reflected heat, and lower cooling costs for you. More info on R-Value.

Condensation

Condensation is the moisture that appears when water vapor hits a cold surface, like your windowpane. It is true that condensation can develop on the window behind a cellular shade. This is a testament to the fact that the shade is working. The warm air in the room is not reaching the window and it will develop condensation that may even freeze over. Occasionally wiping the moisture away and treating/sealing any wooden window frames will help prevent damage to your windows over time. Properly caulking windows will provide an added seal to your window openings.

Remember that condensation happens regardless of the window treatment. Luckily light filtering cellular shades can get wet without damaging the fabric. We recommend mounting any cellular shade approximately 1-4 inches away from the window glass, so it will not be saturated with the condensation and does not rub on the window frame.

If condensation is a concern for you, you can opt for the top down/bottom up feature. On particularly cold nights lowering the shade from the top down a few inches lowers the dew point behind the shade without sacrificing the energy saving benefits.

Why Cellular shades are considered green?

One of the best ways to help our environment is to reduce energy waste. Using fewer resources to heat or cool your home reduces your carbon footprint.

In many areas of the country, including from Vermont to Washington DC every shade that you install in your home will save you about $15/sq ft of glass covered in heating costs. Think of how much that saves in energy consumption!

According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development 80-85% of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions of a building comes from the occupants heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water use. Cellular shades curb that consumption.

How do cellular shades save energy?

Cellular shade fabric is made up of honeycomb shaped cells that trap air. This creates an insulating layer on the window. So in the winter your warm heated air will stay in your house while the cold air coming through the window is stopped by the shades. In the summer the reverse happens.

Are all cellular fabrics the same?

Emphatically NO! Although cell size can vary and this affects insulating efficiency, the most important difference is in how the basic fabric is made.

All cellular fabrics are created from the same principle - a non-woven array of polyester fiber, but the construction of the fabric can vary greatly. There are two ways to create this array of fiber:

Bonded polyester- you can think of as being made from a process similar to paper. Bonded polyester is less porous reducing air flow . Furthermore, because our fabric is bonded particulates that would otherwise get caught in fabric remain on the surface of the shade where they can be vacuumed or dusted off. .

Spun lace- you can think of this polyester as being made similar to cotton candy. Spun lace is a soft open weave that air can pass through depositing particulates in that air within the web of the fabric. Think of it like your car’s air filter. This reduces the insulating value and the shade becomes “grungy” looking faster and is more difficult to clean.

If you have samples of the fabric you can easily differentiate by pouring coffee or soda on the fabric to see if it penetrates or runs off and how easily the stain is removed.

Are Cellular shades organic?

No, Cellular shades are not organic. The fabric is polyester, the head rail and bottom rail are metal, the cording is nylon and the brackets are stainless steel. All these elements are recyclable BUT there are dyes and glues in the fabric, which render them unrecyclable. But the saving and impact the shades make in terms of energy saving without question makes them an environmentally sound product made right here in the USA. The expected life cycle of a Cellular shade is so long that the whole recycling issue is academic because the shades stay out of the landfill far longer than their cheaper counterparts.

Does Hardware make a difference?

YES! Although a great deal of attention is typically given to the fabric when evaluating shades you also need to look at the hardware as that is what will give you durable, trouble free operation.

Broken cords are the most common point of failure. This can stem from a combination of how the cord is locked down, friction created within the cord lock and inadequate cord design and strength.

Our Cellular shades excel in this comparison. Our cord lock mechanism is robust and positive but does not have steel teeth that unnecessarily a braid the cord. We use a Delrin force distribution bearing that reduces friction and our 1.2mm cord is tightly woven with break strength 63% higher than most competition.

Does it matter where the shades are made?

In terms of carbon footprint it is important to buy from an American company. We buy our parts from New York and all fabrication is done in Vermont so you know that you’re buying an American product.

Just as importantly as where your shades are made, is HOW your shades are made. We are very proud of our Vermont fabricators. Our attention to quality control is unmatched. With VERY low turnover, our fabricators have many years of experience so they know what makes a great shade. They sign every shade so you’ll know exactly who made your shade and that it has passed a full inspection. With our Symphony Shades you get the very best craftspeople working with the very best in raw materials.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Can I wash my Symphony Shades?

Our shades are not only beautiful and pleasing to the eye they are designed for durability as well as easy care and cleaning. Our fabrics repel dust and are inherently anti-static, but occasional feather dusting or vacuuming may help to keep the fabrics clean and bright. Spills and stains can be lightly blotted with a cloth or damp sponge. You may need to rub gently with water and mild soap (no bleach!). To clean an entire shade, simply remove the shade from the window and submerge it in a tub, let it soak and then rub it gently with mild soap. Lay the shade flat to dry or place it back in the window and raise it slightly.

BLACK OUT FABRIC CANNOT BE SUBMERGED! SPOT CLEAN ONLY. NEVER SUBMERGE THE HEADRAIL OF CORDLESS SHADES.

Warranty and Repairs

equalizer keeps shades levelWhat happens if my shades get out of level?

That can be a problem requiring a repair (usually a return to the factory) to be corrected. With our self-leveling system you can do this easily yourself just by pulling the shade to its full upright position, now that’s smart!

I just installed my shade and it is about 6” too short. What is going on?

Often times in shipping the shades get a bit stiff. If it is a standard operating shade or a top down/bottom up shade take a look at the equalizer box. When the shade is down the equalizer box should be touching the head rail (see picture below). If it isn’t, the strings may just be a little caught up. Give the cord a good tug down and toward the center of the shade a few times and that should get the cords straightened out.

What if my string breaks?

It depends on which type of shade you have and which string broke. If it is one of the strings that operates the shade, you will need to determine the type of shade that you have. If you have a standard shade, we recommend sending the shade in to be repaired (give us a call and we can help you out!). If it is a continuous cord loop shade (the cord stays the same length), a replacement cord can be sent to you.

Replacement Parts

Some replacement parts are available on our website. If you are not sure if you are ordering the right part, you can contact our service team with a photo of what you are looking for. Because of changes and improvements to Symphony Shade components, we cannot accurately determine the part you need without a photo.
