It has been an eyesore to you for years, but now it’s finally time to take down those mini blinds that have been cluttering your home’s interior space. Before you take these blinds down and replace with a new set of cellular shades, you want to make sure you don’t damage your window frame or walls. For this project, you’re going to need a few tools and an open afternoon.
Tools You’ll Need to Remove Blinds

1. Before you get going, make sure you raise your blinds all the way. Doing this will help you have full control of them throughout the entire removal process.
2. Sometimes you’ll see blinds using a valance or a cornice to cover the brackets and top rails. You’re going to want to remove the valance. Be very gentle during this removal process. Push the bottom of the valance towards the window; this will create a gap between the top of the valance and the top of the clips. Then push the valance outwards and upwards until it isn’t touching the clips. If the valance isn’t removed gently, the clips can come loose and fall off.
3. If you happen to have a door mounted blind, you will need to hold down the brackets to remove them. Typically, these brackets are attached at the bottom of the blind against the door. The end cap of the bottom rail may also have hold-down pins. If this is the case, remove the binds first before removing the hold down brackets.
Now you want to use a screwdriver to remove the hold down bracket screws. If the screws happen to be too tight for removal with a screwdriver, you may want to use pliers to remove them.
4. If you are removing a horizontal blind or another type of wood blind, unlatch the mounting brackets from the front and side headrail. If your blinds are oversized and large, you may need to have another person assist you during this aspect of the project. You may need to refer back to the blinds original installation guide during this step.
5. Take down the center and side mounting brackets with your screwdriver. If the blind happens to have wall anchors, use pliers to remove them.
6. The screws that were in your walls have left small holes; patch up these holes with the joint compound and a putty knife. Apply a small amount of paint once the putty has dried.
7. Take a moment to relax; you’ve finally removed those old dirty blinds!
