The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) are telling parents everywhere to check their existing window treatments for coverings that can be hazards to the health of young children. These two organizations are encouraging parents to replace older treatments with new products that have child safe features.

These organizations recommend that parents equip their homes with the cordless treatments, especially where there are younger children. The CPSC has indicated that window treatments are one of the top five hidden hazards in homes in the United States. Infants have died due to accidental strangulation on the cords on window treatments. Many of these deaths have been due to older and outdated treatments that were never upgraded to make them child safe.

“Window cord strangulations are one of the top hidden hazards in the home,” says Tenenbaum, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman. “CPSC recommends that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords be used in homes with young children. They are available today in the marketplace and will prevent window blind strangulations. Make sure all window shades, blinds and draperies in your home do not have cords that are within the reach of a child.”
